June at Ashuwillticook Rail Trail
This week Luc, my partner Reid, and I have been visiting friends in Canaan, New York. Yesterday we took a short drive to Ashuwillticook Rail Trail in Cheshire, Massachusetts, just north of Pittsfield. This is an asphalt trail that runs over 12 miles. We kept our walk short, roughly 45 minutes to do nearly two miles out and back at a slow pace. We started at a trail parking area located just off the US 7 Rte 8 Connector Road near the intersection with Cheshire Rd and headed north.
This was a nice, flat, straight, shaded walk, perfectly matched to the sunny and mild weather. The trail was fairly busy with people walking and biking, as well as the occasional skateboarder. People biking or skating were generally polite indicating their presence with bells or "on your left" announcements, which is much appreciated especially when walking a Jack Russell! It would be nice to return one day to bike the trail so we could see more of it, but it is also perfect for a shorter dog walk and provides a nice alternative to the numerous unpaved hiking trails in the surrounding mountainous area.
